Affinity Circles & Retreats

circle.jpg

In the circle, we are all equal.
There is no one in front of you, there’s nobody behind you.
No one is above you, no one is below you.
The circle is sacred because it’s designed to create unity.

– Lakota wisdom

Our affinity circle programs are designed to create environments for spiritual and emotional healing and connection among a group of individuals who carry with them a common identity. The goal of such programming is to honor the profound healing and connection that can come from a space in which one feels safe to be more vulnerable, honest, and authentic in processing experiences, doubts, questions, or beliefs related to the shared identity within the circle. We believe that such affinity spaces can give activists and community leaders the courage and confidence to step back into the diverse worlds we all live in with courage, confidence, and greater resilience.

This program opens up an affinity space for Black people and is a seven-part journey into healing internalized racial wounds, community-building, and activism. Participants will be given the opportunity to share, connect, and reflect in a safe, affirming space.

What you Will Experience

We come together to:

  • Share our stories and feelings, always respecting the humanity and dignity of each circle member;

  • Deepen our understanding of the impact of historical forces on our emotional lives, our relationships, and the well-being of our communities;

  • Free our minds and spirits from the lies of White superiority and Black inferiority, and heal from the historical and continuing trauma of racism;

  • Tell ourselves a new, liberating, and empowering story about who we are as people of African ancestry;

  • Revitalize ourselves and our relationships with each other;

  • Learn and practice essential emotional wellness skills to help us be at our very best-–as individuals and as a people; and

  • Develop strategies to extinguish the lies of White superiority and Black inferiority–once and for all.

Emotional Emancipation Circles℠ (EECs) were originated by Community Healing Network, Inc. (CHN) and are the product of a collaboration between CHN and the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi). The EEC process is one of many grassroots strategies devised by CHN to build the movement for freedom from the lies of White superiority and Black inferiority, and other emotional legacies of enslavement and racism. EECs are inspired by the self-help movement and grounded in the principles of Ma’at, the ancient Egyptian understanding of the fundamental order of the universe.

Gender Justice Circles

sacred circle.jpg

Are you seeking space, community, and resources as you process the emerging awareness and discourse around gender injustice?

This program holds an affinity space for women to voice their own narrative and explore personal and collective practices for healing internalized wounds that stem from our culture of patriarchal oppression. Participants will be invited to reflect, share, commune, and envision in a safe, affirming space.

What You Will Experience

Gender Justice Circles are intended to hold space for women to begin to heal from the trauma – both engrained and acute – inflicted by patriarchal oppression. With this shared intention, we come together to:

  • Share our experiences and feelings with respect for the humanity and dignity of ourselves and others;

  • Deconstruct the impact of historical and cultural forces of gender oppression on our physical bodies, our emotional lives, our relationships, and the well-being of our communities;

  • Liberate our minds, bodies, and spirits from the misconceptions of male superiority and female inferiority;

  • Construct a renewed narrative of sisterhood and how it shapes the ways in which we engage in relationship with ourselves and others;

  • Explore practices that ground our lives in this collective liberated vision.

Practices used in the Gender Justice Circles will draw on different cultural and spiritual traditions that honor and embody the feminine spirit. Some gentle movement will be included.
